In December 71, Commander Babru Bahan Yadav headed a missile boat Squadron, as part of the Indian Navy's operations in the western waters. On 4th December night, commander Yadav led his men in an offensive sweep on the enemy coast off Karachi. The area was heavily defended and any intrusion required extraordinary skill and courage. But the commander was a seasoned veteran.
Even as enemy destroyers commenced heavy firing. He launched a swift and daring attack. His skilful command led to the destruction of two enemy destroyers and one minesweeper. In a matter of minutes, they sank into watery depths. Though there were some Indian casualties, the Pakistani navy sustained grievous losses.
Commander Yadav was honoured with the Mahavir Chakra.
