Infiltration of Pakistani forces continued into Jammu & Kashmir even after cease-fire had been declared in 1965.Subedar Tika Bahadur Thapa & the 4/8Gorkha Rifles moved ahead to attack & evict intruders from their position.
The company succeeded in capturing the first position. But when it began its attack on the next position, the commander was wounded. The second in command, Subedar Thapa rallied his men & captured the position after a bitter struggle.
The Pakistani renewed their attempts to recapture these positions aided by artillery fire. As the company's communication link with its own artillery unit had snapped, the Subedar began firing from a mortar. Though he has seriously injured, he remained in charge till the very end.
He was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra for exceptional valor & gallantry
