Baba Amte,the Gandhian humanist and a noted social worker, has been chosen for Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 1999, in recognition of his exemplary work for treatment and rehabilitation of leprosy patients and his concept of Shramik Vidyapeeth.
The prize for 1998 was conferred on Ramkrishna mission in recognition of its "selfless service to humanity which reflected Gandhian view". The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 crore, a citation and a plaque.
