Walled
cities, Jain temples, the rare lions of the Gir Reserve and
the beaches of Diu, make a visit to Gujarat, the birthplace
of Mahatma Gandhi, a rewarding experience.
Through the blaring cacophony of bicycles, autorickwhaws,
cars and bullock carts, a motorcycle with large milk cans
tied astride darts through the streets of Ahmedabad with its
rider bedecked in a brilliant red turban, flashing golden
earrings and a fierce moustache. He is a Rabari from the
milk-vending community, who has adopted modern
transportation while continuing to wear his traditional
dress. He is the essence of Gujarat, where tradition and
modernity combine in a vibrant, dynamic fashion.
