Awarded to recognize distinguished or meritorious service in operational areas which is not of sufficient magnitude to warrant the award of a decoration.

Established: 21 November 1950 by the President of India. The terms of award were modified on 1 August 1964 to reflect alterations in organizational terminology within the Indian armed forces.

Obverse: A bronze lotus leaf worn on the medal ribbon or ribbon bar of the appropriate campaign medal.
