He played a very important role in building the Physics group at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Mumbai. This group is rated one of the best in the world, both in developing Advanced Theory and in Generating the Latest experimental techniques. He himself has worked on properties of matter under high pressure and on scattering of Nuetrons by crystals. Today he is one of the most renowned neutron spectroscopists and crystellographers in the world. Chindabaram became known to the world and to Indians in Particular because of the Leadership role in Pokhran expllosions. Even in 1974, before he had crossed forty, he had pkayed a significant role taking the responsibility of making intricate calculations on the Computer for India's first explosion. Atom bombs a hydrogen bomb two yield devices and the explosions conducted in 1998 required truely remarkable abilities. One cannot import even an iota of technology in these fields. All knowhow needed for atomic explosions for developing missiles, for remote sensoring, for cryogenic engine for a super computer has to be developed indegenously and under utmost secrecy. That is why the work involved inexplosions conducted by Chidambaram and his group at the Bhabha Atomic research Centre is extremely commendable.

Today India is the only developing country that has demonstrated its capability to design build operate and maintain nuclear power plants manufacture all associated equipment and components and produce then requires nuclear fuel and special material.
