Having seen ads for these everywhere Instagram and other websites i used to be intrigued. for fewer than $15 I had to offer a contour gauge a try. they’re as handy and straightforward to use, because the videos suggest.
This Avide contour gauge is reasonable and it works. The pins are held into the frame with enough pressure that a really moderate amount of force will shape the gauge, but the pins won’t slide or move once you draw it away and attend work.
I am also curious about the 5″ version as there are some tight spaces around a couple of pipes this one might not fit. We shall see.
Applications of contour gauges include:
Checking the form of a metal object surface before and after material loss thanks to corrosion or abrasion
Documenting profiles of decorative moldings in architectural conservation
Used with curve templates for metal shaping and bending
Copying awkward shapes in various applications like metalwork, woodwork, tilling, carpet laying and far more
Duplicate edge and corner contours on tile, sheet , wood, carpet
Used to model airplanes and ships
Used to get the precise contour of a repair area
Checking gears for wear and deviation from the first profile
